Form patterns are a shift from the purely customized form structure in AX 2009. Ahhhh, freedom to do as you please. BUT, customization is the answer to and the cause of all your problems! In 2012 we get limited template support and a few pain points as a bonus: no feedback without the form style checker, no help building the forms, and not all forms fit a pattern.
Introducing the new and improved Form patterns! The NEW AX FP's define the basic structure, the objects and controls, and the meta data.

- With patterns there are guaranteed responsive designs
- Validation (validates against the patterns in dev)
- Simpler/faster construction
92% of AX7 out of the box forms use patterns; this equates to about 6000 total forms.
There are approximately 33 form patterns and 21 sub patterns and all are up-gradable from MS. These can be applied to current forms and then it is up to the developer to fix any errors on the application. How to select a form pattern?
What if you need a form that does not conform to a pattern? It is still possible, discouraged, but possible. Uncle Satya will need to visit your place of business and verify the REAL need for the customization. He will either give you his blessing and a super secret code to implement the customization OR a furrowed brow and a harumph.
If you must customize remember:
- Ensuring correct and responsive layout is your responsibility
- No free upgrade as pattern evolves
- Log BP suppression with justification
