It is all about the WEB and FLOW

It is all about the WEB and FLOW

Productivity and anywhere access through the Microsoft Dynamics AX  web client experience (click to download the slide deck)

Considering where AX is headed, this session opened up with an appropriate quote from one of the moderators,Todd Lefor, "Put your head into the cloud and start dreaming!" This a call in response prompted by the age old adage, "Get head out of the clouds and stop daydreaming."

Obviously, the UI of the New AX is beautiful. Gorgeous. It is built on the web for the web. The application is available in all modern browsers using native web controls that we are all used to seeing. The genius is that unless you as developer are looking to build custom controls you do not need to know HTML or Java Script with AX in the Cloud.

The Form Style Checker introduced in 2012 has morphed into Form Patterns.
Patterns have made form development easier in Dynamics AX by providing a guided experience for applying patterns to forms to guarantee that they are correct and consistent. Patterns help validate form and control structures, and also the use of controls in some places. Patterns also help guarantee that each new form that a user encounters is immediately recognizable in appearance and function.

The look of the forms has simplified as well. Here are a few examples:

Dialog boxes are now sliders that slide out from the right of the form as smooth as a 1980's line dancer, it's electric...(boogie-oogie-oogie)! This also leads to a mini digression with the naming of things. If you have ever seen the three-line stack indicating menus (look below in the upper left corner of the newly designed and breathtaking dashboard) it is called the HAMBURGER.

Menu, Sliders, and Hamburgers? Were the Microsoft naming folk finishing up just before lunch?

A few extra Dev tips:

  • Certain object code functions like Mouse Move or Leave are deprecated
  • All code runs on the SERVER!
  • The main menu is searchable
  • Certain API's no longer work: Deprecated APIS

Also plan to redo your ROLE CENTER. As you can see from the above example, the new dashboard is vastly different and will require a rebuild.
